OK, now I roll up my sleeves and answer a challenge from Clarisse Lopes Offen. I am to post the 15 films that most influenced me. I do so in the order that they come to my head because I figure that raw reaction is a strong indicator of their influence: 1) Ikiru, directed by Akira Kurosawa. Helped me see how a film about really normal stuff can feel mystical. I was moved by its theme of how other-mindedness can free one from the prison of mundaneness and open one to a godly reality. 2) Red Beard, also directed by Kurosawa. Id like to think the way Kurosawa brilliantly frames shots here has influenced how I frame shots. The theme of changing from a selfish to a selfless state and the way that the change moves others to do the same is important to me. 3) New York Doll, directed by Greg Whiteley. This film is one of the reasons I emphasized in documentary production in film school. I felt so close to the people whose story it tells when I watched it. 4) Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir. Watching this the first time (and every time) was simply a magical story. I love its story of being freed from prison by love. 5) Stranger Than Fiction, directed by Mark Forster. To me, this film is almost the same film as The Truman Show and that is a good thing. Same theme (for me) and same sort of brilliant performance from a typecast comedian. 6) The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed by Ben Stiller. I know all of this films weaknesses. It is not perfect. But it deeply moved me to be a better person. (Im running out of time so these will get shorter from here on out) 7) Bridge to Terabithia. 8) The Tigger Movie. 9) The Umbrellas of Cherborge. 10) Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. 11) Cars. 12) Groundhog Day. 13) Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. 14) Hannah and Her Sisters. 15) Home Alone. I challenge Kirby Saxton, William Nielson McAllister, and Jamie Brodhead Wagner.
