OK, so color me surprised. Last night, Senator Ted Cruz decided to go on a 14 hour gripe session to talk about how much he does not like the Affordable Care Act. I want to know what genius slipped him the Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham”? The dog in this story opens by saying that he does “no t like that Sam I Am.” Every mother knows the purpose of this story is to teach children not to blindly judge other people, and to try new things. In this delightful book, Sam I am urges the stubborn dog to try the green eggs and ham. He is willing to try any number of ways to help the dog realize how good the green eggs and ham are, but the dog is just not willing to try anything new. Finally, by the end of the book, Sam I am and the dog end up at the bottom of the sea, just because of the unreasonableness of the dog. The dog realizes that the only way to get Sam I am to stop trying to get him to eat the green eggs and ham … is to try them. “Say!” He finally admits, “I like green eggs and ham!” If we just give something a try, who knows? We might like it! It baffles me that we stubbornly cling to the idea “but we’ve always done it this way.” According to the World Health Organization, we spend more on health care than any other country (as a measure of our GDP). One would expect if we are spending that much money we would have great outcomes right? SORRY, NO! We rank just above Slovenia and Cuba. They each spend less than 10% of GDP to achieve the same level of fair health care that we spend billions on (over 17% of our GDP). Perhaps Senator Cruz would have better said “I do not like this health care bill, I do not like it on the hill. I will not listen to the left, I will not read it, I know best. I do not hear the moderates, health care we won’t tolerate. I do not care if people die, we will not change. Now don’t ask why.” Perhaps we should listen to Dr. Seuss, his persistent little Sam I am, was right. Perhaps we should listen to Albert Einstein who said that to do the same thing the same way and expect different results is insanity. We are insane if we think we can continue to pump 17% of our GDP into health care, simply because we refuse to see that the uninsured cost everyone of us who has insurance. Please do not think I am blaming the uninsured. It is not their fault. Our broken system is to blame! We MUST offer health care to all Americans if we want to fix our broken system.
