OK so, the Trust me Im a Doctor episode. I really like Mike Moseley, but I was cranky about the vitamin D deficiency segment 1. All the people in the study were white. OK, some of them might not have been white by census definition, but there were no real dark skinned people in it. Dark skin means you cant get enough vitamin D from sunlight exposure at these latitudes - thats why we evolved white skin, folks. Melanin protects you from UVA, which is a good thing in Africa but not so great in Sweden. 2. They didnt mention - for lack of time, I guess - what they seem to have known perfectly well: you can get vitamin D from ten minutes in summer in Bognor Regis, not so much in Aberdeen in February. 3. They said nothing about the dosage of vitamin D supplements - the current recommended daily dose is ridiculously low, and a proper supplement dose should be 2000 UI. As for the toxicity, it is much less of a danger than previously thought, hence the guidelines will be adjusted upward, but, you know, in due time. 4. They didnt mention, but this is less of a grump for me, that vitamin D massively reduced frequency and severity of infections, and seem to be correlated with the fact that flu only shows up on winter. So what I took away was that I am welcome to eat my beloved salmon, but I am keeping taking my D3 as well.
