OK so we’re going to be controversial and put a different perspective out there. Topman are being slated at the moment because they’re retailing a line of clothing with Rottweilers baring their teeth. Now in the past we’ve seen articles written about a dog bite and a picture of a Rottweiler used when the dog in question was a different breed. When articles about dangerous dogs are written the media love to grab the image of a Rottweiler baring it’s teeth, yet the article is about multiple breeds or may not even be related to Rottweilers. We certainly object to these types of images being used. But all dogs bare their teeth for a number of reasons from aggression to protecting to play fighting. Does the clothing line at TOPMAN portray the breed in a negative way or is it personal taste? In the same line are tshirts with wild animals baring their teeth, some with a wolf in a neutral pose, one with the Virgin Mary and her son Jesus which comes across to me as being religious. Some tshirts I would wear – some I wouldn’t. It’s not a statement but a personal choice. The long sleeved top with a mirror image of two dogs isn’t even clear enough to tell if it’s actually Rottweilers. We’ve heard the question why haven’t they used a ‘nice’ picture of a Rottweiler? But is this asked from an owners perspective? Some people like aggressive images and looks. The statement it makes. People take cars and style them to look ‘mean’, have an aggressive stance. It doesn’t mean that the people who own these cars are all boy racers and menaces to the road. They just like the styling. Some people will like one car over another because of it’s ‘stance’ – the way the manufacturer has designed it. Other cars look like they have a ‘smiley face’. Some people really don’t care what a car looks like, it’s other factors like it’s cost, it’s economy or how many seats it has. Is it perhaps the same with this clothing. Criminal Damage who designed the clothing are a brand born in 1991 from the vibrant streets of East London who produce a collection of ready to wear pieces plastered with tongue in cheek graphics, intricate prints and quality detailing. I don’t believe they are trying to make any statement about Rottweilers nor portray the breed in a negative light, they think it looks cool – it is an image nothing more, you either love it, hate it or are indifferent. You cant sensor the world, you can only make your own personal choices. Would I wear it? Yes. Would I buy it? At £28 – no.
