OK, time for a bit of a controversial thought. Gary Barlow isnt evil. (In fact I know someone who, in turn, knows him personally and says hes quite a nice chap). Gary Barlow was advised by professionals to take steps to minimise his tax liability. Hes hardly alone in this, just a bit more high profile. For those with an interest in history, loveable British comic Norman Wisdom got in a similar mess with the Revenue in the 1950s. Im afraid that I think that most of the ire aimed at Gary Barlow (particularly from fellow musicians) is based on jealousy. This is fairly obvious when it is accompanied by snide comments about the merits of his artistic output. Since when was success ever distributed fairly and according to merit, and, if, ideally, it should be, is it Garys fault that it isnt and he has been successful? It misses the point entirely. What is needed is not a campaign to make one man hand back a medal. What is needed is a fairer society based on a properly enforced tax system that is just to all. So my view is, leave Gary alone and engage with the real issue.
