OK well I think it is early enough (but not too early) to throw this out: I like to do a January climb of Lone Peak. This means piles and piles of snow to snowshoe through, and a truly scary traverse of a knife edge to the small bouldery summit. This is not running, although you may be able to do some of that at the lower elevation of the route. I start from Orson Smith TH in Draper, connect to the Cherry Canyon logging trail up to Draper Ridge, then into the cirque, up the North shoulder to the summit. The way is safe all the way until the final ridge traverse. There you will encounter a steep slope leading off a cliff to the right. To the left is a drop in to the abyss of Bells Canyon. This climb just to get into the cirque will test your fitness. Snowshoes are mandatory because physics sez so. So is an ice axe if you plan to traverse to the summit. Crampons? Meh. Never needed them up there, although Katoolas are light and nice. I take no responsibility for anyone willing to go with me. I tell you now: It is dangerous up there. There is no coming back from a fall from the ridge. I will be going up some Saturday in January - lets say the 17th. Or if the weather is crappy that day, then the 24th. Or even the 31st. Come with if this interests you. I would love your company. We had a great day January 2014.
