OKAY, THIS really happened: Maureen and I were having lunch with Friend No. 1 today, recounting the events and travels in our lives over the past months when our friend tells us about her trip up to New York and the opportunity she had to attend a lecture by Tom Brokaw, the television journalist, anchor, and author. This reminded Maureen and me of Friend No. 2 (they don’t know one another), who had a personal encounter with Brokaw this summer -- including the picture to prove it -- when through some airline snafu, the two of them found themselves stranded in some Midwestern city. And like the movie, “Planes, Trains…,” wound up sharing together the only rental car available in a 4-hour ride to make a flight connection. And while that is story enough, because we heard our friend tell it several times, this is the part that makes the world amazingly small -- we tell our lunch friend about our other friends’ story, and she says: “Oh yes, Mr. Brokaw told everybody about it because it had happened on his way to the lecture. He said he’d just shared a car ride with a stranger who turned out to be a wonderful new friend. I was glad to be present to tie the ends of the story together. We had dessert.
