ON A SERIOUS NOTE: The El Dorado Union High School District is seriously discussing shutting down UMHS, selling the facility to the Los Rios Community College & building a new HS down in El Dorado Hills. The most vocal proponent of this plan is an EDH real estate developer who doesn’t have kids at any of the schools. The new housing development in EDH, Brookstone (located on the Latrobe side) was built without consideration of how it would affect Oak Ridge, which is already impacted. So their HS residents go to UM...most of the Brookstone parents like UMs block schedule, smaller class size & their kids chances to participate in a smaller athletic program that doesnt, as a rule, make cuts. But there are a few parents who dont like their kids being bused up the hill, and in this case the squeaky wheel is getting all the attention... The reason this was brought to me is because there is NO voice for the eastern slope of El Dorado County. My source thinks if we could start a movement of parents equally concerned about not only losing our beautiful UM, but how this will effect El Do & Pondo when 1,000 students have to be fed into their already at capacity schools. There is a EDUHSD special “workshop” meeting on Tues, Jan 20th, Oak Ridge HS at 5:00. I’ve been asked to try to rally the eastern slope troops to voice our concerns about this plan. I will show up to the meeting with a written statement of the positive impact UM has had on my graduate as well as my current student. I would like to see this as a positive movement, if we go in “guns a’blazin” I don’t think we will be taken seriously. So please take the next month to think about what UMHS means to you. Jot down some notes on why you feel this way & bring them to the meeting on the 20th ready to share. Remember… it not only affects students who live within the UM boundaries, but it will have a ripple effect for all the surrounding schools… 1,000 students have to go somewhere… Feel free to share this post on your page if you think the information should be passed on.
