Day FOUR at the World Baseball Challenge… Friday, Aug. 16. **Today – FIRST 300 people through the gates receive a free Toronto Blue Jays cap, from our great friends – Canada’s Major League Baseball Franchise! TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR ALL GAMES AT THE CITIZEN FIELD BOX OFFICE STANDINGS Ciego de Avila Tigres (Cuba) 2-0 Chinese Taipei National Team 1-1 NWAACC-USA 1-1 JX-Eneos (Japan) 1-1 Team Canada 0-2 *Top three teams make playoffs – first place direct to final TODAY’S GAMES (Ciego de Avila Tigres have the day off) NWAACC-USA vs. JX-ENEOS OF JAPAN, 3 pm An important game for both teams – Japan will be looking to build off a great pitching performance on Thursday night in blanking Canada 9-0, while USA is also wanting to post a second win to keep pace with the undefeated Ciego de Avila Tigres. TEAM CANADA vs. CHINESE TAIPEI NATIONAL TEAM, 7 pm Two teams coming off Thursday losses – Canada has not been happy with its defensive showing so far, while Chinese Taipei suffered a disappointing loss to Cuba. WEDNESDAY RECAPS (Boxscores below) CUBA 10 CHINESE TAIPEI 3 -- The Ciego de Avila Tigres flexed their muscles with four home runs among their 14 hits and righthander Yander Guevara, another member of the Ciego de Avila team that has played for Cuba in the World Baseball Classic, went eight strong innings. Cuba has now used its bullpen sparingly after two World Baseball Classic stars, Guevara and Vladimir Garcia posted impressive starts. Chinese Taipei scored all its runs on solo home runs. Cuban third baseman Raul Gonzalez, who nearly had to play with another glove after leaving his gamer at the hotel, was 3-5 with three runs driven in, including a home run. Yoelvis Fiss blasted one of the Cuban home runs. JAPAN 9 CANADA 0 – Canada is known as a cold country, and the team’s bats aren’t killing that reputation. The Canadian offence mustered just two hits through eight innings, and JX-Eneos built up a 7-0 lead through four innings and coasted to a 9-0 win, in a game that featured just one extra-base hit. Canada’s defence did not help with six errors, but you have to score runs to win. LOOKING AHEAD An absolutely HUGE schedule of games after today – Saturday and Sunday have outstanding matchups.
