Day FIVE at the World Baseball Challenge… Saturday, Aug. 17 TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR ALL GAMES AT THE CITIZEN FIELD BOX OFFICE STANDINGS Ciego de Avila Tigres (Cuba) 2-0 Chinese Taipei National Team 2-1 JX-Eneos (Japan) 2-1 NWAACC-USA 1-2 Team Canada 0-3 *Top three teams make playoffs – first place direct to final TODAY’S GAMES (Ciego de Avila Tigres have the day off) CHINESE TAIPEI NATIONAL TEAM vs. JX-ENEOS OF JAPAN, 3 pm One of these teams is moving to 3-1 and will keep pace with the undefeated Ciego de Avila Tigres of Cuba, one will stay within distance of USA and Canada. Japan is coming off an impressive 8-5 win over NWAACC-USA, while Chinese Taipei outlasted Canada 8-2. NWAACC-USA vs. CIEGO DE AVILA TIGRES OF CUBA, 7 pm It’s not hard to call this the most highly-anticipated game in tournament history, the Cuban and Americans at Citizen Field. This is the game US wanted, and Cuba can make a major statement in this tournament by improving to 3-0 and doing it against their biggest international baseball rivals… the stands, they will be packed for this Saturday night encounter. Cuba’s pitching staff is in great shape thanks to outstanding starts from Vladimir Garcia and Yander Guevara in the first two games. FRIDAY RECAPS (Boxscores below) JX ENEOS JAPAN 8 NWAACC-USA 5 – Japan won again using a format that works so well for them – chip away with singles and great baserunning, and throw strikes and play defence. Japan scored eight times on 11 hits, and not one of those hits was for extra bases. Japan might be described as the best fundamental team in the World Baseball Challenge. CHINESE TAIPEI 8 CANADA 2 – Jackson Gooch was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, but Canada was kept very quiet on offence by three Chinese Taipei pitchers. Prince George’s Brooklyn Foster was 1-2 to raise his tournament average to .444. Chinese Taipei hit two timely home runs to score three times in each of the second and fifth innings. LOOKING AHEAD Sunday’s schedule features two outstanding matchups – Chinese Taipei and USA, and Canada out to get on the scoreboard against the powerful Cubans. Sunday is also Downtown Rotary and Nechako Rotary Day at the Park, for all youth baseball players, a free day pass, thanks to those great two Rotary clubs.
