ON EMERGENCIES ( remembering iindian emergency declared 39 years ago, 1975/june 25---------by indira gandhi ) TN Joy ‘If the choice is between a jailor and prisoner I would prefer the condition of the prisoner’. This is an attempt at formulating a few premises (still searching their questions) that could be aligned with the simple truth that absolute power is nothing other than the hidden terror intrinsic to the state power. But, it should not be ended as a personal matter. What is the significance of the Tri-Colour Emergency of 1975? From the beginning the then Maoists understood the situation as ending mask or facade of Indian Democracy. And there was an urgency to attack the repressive instruments of the state such as police stations, seize the guns as part of encircling and capturing the cities. The urgency was for such an adventurous course of action. It was quite natural that the semi-fascism of Indira was not a shocker to those engaged in armed struggle in Sreekakulam, Bhojpur and Birbhum. For the jail birds of Kerala the need for a new line of thought, at least the strategy and tactics of the revolution, became a necessity even before the withdrawal of emergency. In the cold comfort of jail walls however the urge for democratic concepts remained in a slumber. Was the condition of Kerala and India before the imposition of Emergency slightly better? Leaderships of CPI-ML in Kerala and Bhojpur took a decision to confront this question very late. . When we look back at the recent past, 39 years later in the shadow of a Saffron Emergency, what are the things we could have done in practice in 1975? The answer is simple. Whatever we did then could have been done in a much better manner. More attacks on police stations, more liberated zones and a united central leadership! The worries emanating from such a conclusion is beyond the purview of this memoir. Moreover whether you accept or not the Maoist Movement – sacrificing life and taking life – exists in North India. Is it having a rosy future? Or is a future in darkness? Such worries are also outside the purview of this note. The Indian dawn that emerges after the suppression of even the last surviving Maoist will be such a beautiful affair? What can be done? . 1: Unity in action between those lost the elections (Congress, parliamentary left) and non-parliamentary left and Muslims the victims Modi against the Silent Saffron Emergency? . Post-script: The economics of socialism and capitalism is an issue that has been under-theorized. Can the reality of stagnation of production be addressed with an increase by number of anti-imperialist and anti-corporatist slogans? It would not be a crime to remember what Amartya Sen said sometime back. There is nothing wrong with the new economic policies, but, it should be implemented under the leadership of the Left.
