ON THE TRAIL OF THE ASSUMPTA – Part XXIII of a Broken Series (Addendum from Rev. Fr. Raymond Tabon) Since you mentioned Teban [Dr. Esteban Juaban] and Tonying [Antonio Guimbaolibot], may I add some little information about them and the ‘49ners [the group that graduated from the Assumption College in 1949]. The group was re-organized in 1961 when I returned to Guiuan to celebrate my “canta misa,” after being in Italy for eleven years. As you have cited in your post, the group is proud of the fact that many of their members have become mostly professionals, so they became more excited when they knew that one of them, became a priest who studied in Rome and was ordained there. “The first from Guiuan to have done so,” they said. [During my “canta misa,”] the presence of the ‘49ners, the members of the faculty of the Assumption College, and groups of students made the event really a very memorable one. Even some government officials, Cong. Felipe Abrigo, Engr. Victor Rama, etc., were present. [During the reorganization of the ‘49ners], I think it was Dr. Steve Juaban who acted as the president of the group, and Tonying Guimbaolibot was the secretary. [Since then], he was in-charge of informing the members about our meetings every time I would come home to Guiuan for vacation. I was then the Director of the St. Joseph Mission Institute in Batangas. We would have thanksgiving Mass at the chapel of the Assumption College and then we would have a picnic in Sapao, when the weather was good. This is the first picture of the re-organized ‘49ners taken during my canta misa, November 1961. Dr. Steve Juaban and Mr. Tonying Guimbaolibot were not yet present in this picture. Also absent was Mana Charing Darang. On first row is Mana Epion Darang, who was then our class adviser and me. On second row are: Nila Perez Chua, [Felisa Darang Alday], Maria Dagami Villareal, Maria Pading Rosit, one of the Lagramada twins (whom I dont remember which, whether Caring or Esperanza), Josefina Gonzales, and Bibiana Solis Hilvano. On top row are Alejandro Parambita, Pastor Gigata, Teofilo Macabasag, Felipe Cabacaba (from Tubabao), and Fortunato Macasa. I hope to send you more recent pictures, taken in 2010 during my golden jubilee, with Dr. Steve, Lilia and others. God bless them all. Many of them have already gone home to our Creator and Father.
