ON THIS DATE IN 1965, DOWNTOWN made PETULA CLARK the first British female vocalist to have a #1 on US singles chart since Vera Lynn did it in 1952 with Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart. In the UK, DOWNTOWN peaked at #2. The song was written by Pets longtime musical collaborator Tony Hatch, who won Britains 1981 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for the song. In 1964, his song won the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song of the Year. In 1965, DOWNTOWN won the Grammy for Best Rock and Roll Song & was certified gold with sales of more than 1 million. In 2003, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
