ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY SEPTEMBER 29th 1898 Samori Toure was captured by the French and exiled to Gabon. 1979 Ex-president Francisco Macias Nguema of Equatorial Guinea was executed following his overthrow a few weeks earlier. 1980 The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture opened a new $3.8 million building in New York City. 2001 Mabel Fairbanks, the first black woman to be inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame, died at the age of 85. 2005 Former Education Secretary William Bennett, now a nationally syndicated radio host, told a caller that "If you wanted to reduce crime, ... you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down."
