ON THIS DATE IN MUSIC HISTORY (June 3, 1989): American heavy metal/hard rock band Guns N Roses was peaking at the No. 4 spot on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with their fourth consecutive Top 10 pop hit in the United States, Patience. Written by band member Izzy Stradlin, the motivation behind the power ballad is generally accepted to be the troublesome relationship between lead singer Axl Rose and now ex-wife Erin Everly (daughter of The Everly Brothers Don Everly), though this was never stated in the album or interviews. According to bass guitarist Duff McKagan, Axl came up with a great lyric, seemingly out of nowhere, that of course became the story and melody of that song. It has also been stated by the band that Izzy wrote the song about his ex-girlfriend Angela Nicoletti McCoy, but it may simply be about failed relationships in general. In the promotional music video, the band members are situated in a hotel where they are the only constant images, as all other people are present for a moment, then fade away. The video, directed by Nigel Dick, was one of many produced by the band. It was the last video in which Steven Adler (even though he did not play on the recorded track) appeared and the last before the 1991 Use your Illusion videos. The music video was shot in The Ambassador Hotel, famous because Bobby Kennedy was assassinated there in 1968. The hotel was inoperative and scheduled for demolition, but was not demolished until 2006. Guns N Roses Patience peaked at No. 7 on Billboards Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1989, and was also a Top 10 on the singles charts of other countries: Ireland (No. 2), the Netherlands (No. 4), New Zealand (No. 4) and on the official UK Singles Chart (No. 10).
