ON THIS DATE On this date, November 1, in 1857, the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. abandoned the Allegheny Portage Railroad. The PRR was the high (& only) bidder at the June 25, 1857, auction at which the state sold the Main Line of Public Works (the Main Line Canal, Columbia & Philadelphia RR, and Allegheny Portage RR). The PRR assumed ownership on August 1, 1857, operated the line for 3 months and then shut it down on November 1. The Portage RR was abandoned 157 years ago, but it definitely wont be forgotten as long as we have any say! Three cheers for the Portage!!! (dkb)
