ON THIS DAY - December 30, 1928 EAST MELBOURNE DEATH SENTENCE FOR MURDER After an hours retirement the jury in the Melbourne Criminal Court, Melbourne, returned a verdict of guilty when Thompson Gardiner William Bacon (40), a switchboard attendant, was charged with the murder of Daisy Saraj Ledgerd in her flat at East Melbourne on December 30. Evidence showed that after unsuccessfully imploring the deceased to renew their affectionate relations, Bacon stabbed her and later cut his own throat. The jury added a recommendation for mercy on the ground that accused was under great mental strain. The Chief Justice, before passing sentence of death, stated that he would bring the recommendation for mercy before the proper authorities.
