ON THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY: November 14th 1770 James Bruce, a Scottish explorer, discovered the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. 1915 Booker T. Washington, educator and founder of Tuskegee Institute, died. 1916 Mabel Fairbanks, the first black woman to be inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame, was born. 1954 Administrator and politician Dr. Condoleezza Rice was born. Rice became secretary of state of the United States in 2004. 1960 U.S. marshals and parents escorted four black girls to two New Orleans schools, three of them to McDonogh elementary and the fourth, six-year-old Ruby Bridges, to Frantz elementary. 1962 Ethiopia annexed Eritrea, revoking its autonomy. This action triggered the Eritrean fight for independence. 1975 The Madrid Agreement was signed. Spain agreed to end colonial rule in the Western Sahara and entered a tripartite agreement to partition the territory between Morocco and Mauritania. 1981 Senegal and Gambia formed a confederation known as Senegambia, headed by the president of Senegal, Abdou Diouf. 1990 SWAPO (South West Africa Peoples Organization) secured 41 of the 72 seats, winning 57.3 per cent of the votes in the pre-independence Constituent Assembly of Namibia.
