Roger Penskes first win as an owner as Mark Donohue wins the 1973 Winston Western 500 in the #16 AMC (Roger Penske) 73 Matador BIRTHS:||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Clarence Walter (Jud) Larson (January 21, 1923 Grand Prairie, Texas – June 11, 1966 Reading, Pennsylvania) - drove in the USAC Championship Car series, racing in the 1956-1959 and 1964-1965 seasons with 53 starts, including the 1958 and 1959 Indianapolis 500 races. He finished in the top ten 38 times, with 7 victories. Larson died as a result of injuries sustained in a sprint car crash which also claimed the life of Red Riegel. He was inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1992. Gary Beck (January 21, 1941 in Seattle, Washington) - 1972 NHRA U.S. Nationals Top Fuel dragster winner, 1974 NHRA and AHRA Champion, Drag News Driver of the Year and Car Craft Top Fuel driver of the year, 1975 Canadian Open Top Fuel champion. In 1983 he ran 17 of the fastest 18 runs in Top Fuel history and capping off the multi-win season with his second World Championship. He retired from the NHRA tour in 1986, having won 19 Top Fuel events plus multiple events on the IHRA and AHRA circuits. Inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 1999, on the National Hot Rod Association Top 50 Drivers, 1951–2000, Beck was ranked 24th.
