Joe Walsh begins life in Wichita, KS. The slightly off-kilter guitarist/vocalist does time with the James Gang, Barnstorm and even works as a solo, before finding steady employment with the Eagles (he joins in ‘76). 1947 1960s Bob Dylan cuts his first tracks for Columbia Records in New York. The results appear on Dylan’s self-titled debut. 1961 Beastie Boy Mike D (Michael Diamond) is born. 1965 The Beach Boys landmark “Smiley Smile” is released. Critics praise it but the public passes throwing Beach Boys’ leader/songwriter Brian Wilson into a drug addled emotional tailspin. 1967 1970s I’d Love To Change The World, from Ten Years After, barely dents the Top 40 but the parent album, Space In Time still goes platinum. 1971 Elton John’s Crocodile Rock,” written by John and Bernie Taupin, is released in the U.S. It becomes Elton’s first U.S. #1. 1972 Keith Moon collapses twice during The Who’s San Francisco show. Following the second breakdown, guitarist Pete Townshend asks if anyone in the audience can fill in for Moon. 19 year old Scott Halpin sits-in on drums for three songs. 1973 George Harrison and Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel and solo) sing together on Saturday Night Live. The pair roll through Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun” and Simon’s “Homeward Bound.” 1976 1980s The Who kick off their North American tour in typical fashion. At a post-concert party in Houston bassist John Entwistle is arrested for disorderly conduct. He spends a few hours in jail before The Who roll on. 1987 1990s Rolling Stones sign with Virgin Records and set the record (since broken) for being the highest paid group at $45 million. 1991 David Crosby (The Byrds/Crosby, Stills & Nash) undergoes a liver transplant operation in L.A. 1994 The Beatles’ “Free As A Bird” is gets its first radio play. The song starts as a John Lennon demo with instrumentation added by the surviving Beatles. George Harrison has a copy and gives it to an Adelaide DJ who plays the song 24 hours before it’s officially released to radio. Harrison is in town for the Australian Grand Prix. 1995 2000s Four albums are released: Creed’s “Weathered,” Kid Rock’s “Cocky,” Hoobastanks self-titled debut and “The Smashing Pumpkins – Greatest Hits. 2001 The Experience Music Project in Seattle unveils an exhibit called Bob Dylans American Journey, 1956-1966. Dylan guitars, hand written and typed lyrics and concert posters are on display along with Dylan interviews. 2004 Scott Stapp, formerly of Creed, sings the national anthem at NASCARs Ford 400 race in Miami (actually Homestead, FL). The appearance also promotes his album The Great Divide. 2005 U2 are profiled on CBS 60 Minutes. 2005 Foo Fighters release a six-track EP thats only available at Best Buy retailers. Theres a live rendition of Best of You, a demo version of D.O.A. and a cover of Creams I Feel Free. 2005 Army of Anyone, with Richard Patrick of Filter and Stone Temple Pilots siblings Dean and Robert DeLeo appear on NBCs Late Night With Conan OBrien. 2006 30 Seconds To Mars premiere their video for the single From Yesterday on MTV2. Filmed in the Peoples Republic of China, the martial arts-themed clip is (to date) the only American Rock video shot in its entirety in the country. 30 Seconds frontman Jared Leto directed. 2006 Does God know about this? A multimedia exhibition focusing on Black Sabbath opens in Los Angeles. Black Sabbath Resurrection uses video, music and graffiti art to tell a sci-fi/fantasy story centering on the group. Vintage Sabbath posters and other related items are displayed in an adjacent gallery. 2006 Dreaming of a white X-Mas wedding. Billy Idol’s Happy Holidays, an album with 17 Christmas songs ranging from traditional carols to modern holiday themes, is available on his web site. I wanted a selection that would please all, while still exploring the awe and mystery that is Christmas, says Idol. 2006 Rock Band video game is out. The 58-song soundtrack includes the Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones, The Who, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden and the Clash. The soundtrack also features songs from indie up-and-coming acts. 2007 The three disc, Live Earth -- The Concerts For A Climate In Crisis, is released. It has performances from the 7/7/07 international concert series to raise awareness about global warming. Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Metallica, Chris Cornell, the Smashing Pumpkins, Bon Jovi and founding Pink Floyd member Roger Waters are featured. 2007 Nirvanas ‘93 MTV Unplugged session is out on DVD. The 15-track disc features two songs, Oh Me and Something In The Way, that were performed during the session but didnt air on MTVs initial broadcast. 2007 A 10-foot guitar replica signed by Paul McCartney goes for more than $120,000 at the London GuitarTown benefit auction. Im really amazed and very happy that the guitar went for so much and for such a great cause, says McCartney. Similar sculptures autographed by Robert Plant and Ozzy Osbourne, and real instruments signed by Roger Waters, Ronnie Wood, Slash are also auctioned. The event raises money for three U.K. charities – the Prince’s Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. 2007 KISS bassist-singer Gene Simmons gives the keynote speech at the Billboard Touring Conference in New York. Simmons takes the opportunity to express some frustration that his band isn’t yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I believe we have more gold records in America than any other group, but its OK. While KISS might still be left out in the cold, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are two-time winners, Top Draw and Top Tour. Also, Bon Jovis Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation is presented the Humanitarian Award. The organization is singled out for providing affordable housing to those in need. And finally, the Allman Brothers Band is given the Legend of Live honor for significant and lasting impact on the touring world. Theyre an American institution and concert icons, says a Billboard spokesperson. In accepting the honor, Gregg Allman acknowledges his older brother, the late guitar great Duane Allman. Im sure hes looking down [on] this and is really proud of us, says Gregg. 2008 2010s Oasis: The Truth, written by former Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll, is out. The book chronicles his experience in the band before he was fired in ‘95. “Therere a lot of things I need to put right,” says McCarroll. “There is another side to the Oasis story which I think needs to be appreciated.” Namely, his side. 2010 Maroon 5 win the Favorite Pop-Rock Band/Duo/Group award at the 39th annual American Music Awards in L.A. Christina Aguilera joins Maroon 5 for Moves Like Jagger, before the band’s frontman Adam Levine teams with Gym Class Heroes to perform their hit Stereo Hearts. 2011 Something Unto Nothing (S.U.N.), a group with multi-platinum vocalist and Canadian Idol judge Sass Jordan and multi-instrumentalist Brian Tichy, release their debut full-length, self-titled album digitally. The lead single is Im The One.” 2012 Rush are inducted into the Guitar Centers RockWalk on Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard.
