ON THIS DAY: The inauguration of the newly completed Hagia Sophia - TopicsExpress

ON THIS DAY: The inauguration of the newly completed Hagia Sophia Cathedral of Constantinople took place on December 27, 537 A.D. with Byzantine Emperor Justinian in attendance and Patriarch Menas consecrating the magnificent new church. Justinian was in such awe at the incredible beauty of the building he had ordered built that he exclaimed Oh, Solomon, I have surpassed thee. Greek architects Anthemios of Tralles and Isidoros of Miletos most likely were influenced by the mathematical theories of Archimedes (ca. 287–212 B.C.) in their groundbreaking design of a dome that appears to be floating above without any supports. This Wonder of World was the largest Christian cathedral for over a thousand years and continues to be a special place of emotional attachment for Greeks and all Orthodox Christians around the world.
