ONCE, MY LIFE: CHEAP SHOT I hate being interrupted when bargaining. I was haggling the price of some jackfruit in Pasar Larkin when an Indian lady and her big daughter came along. The mother said: Last time I came here, not so sweet. In my heart I whispered: Then why are you back here, lady? I told the fruit-seller, whose face had turned a different colour: Kasi rasa sikit. He gave me a slice, and I then took six of the seven packets of jackfruit on the table, as the daughter scrambled to get the last packet, and I said: Aiyah, I take only six packets ah, if sweet, I take ten packets! That sent the fruit-seller beaming.
