ONE DAY LATE... …with my promised update. Not bad for me. I just got back from a couple of weeks in Perth where I played a few songs at a close friends wedding (Thanks, Des & Alana). When I was done I took my guitar to another friends significant birthday (one with a 0 at the end of it) and ended up playing a few songs there too. Ah, Im always having to sing for my supper! Ill be singing for some other peoples suppers in two weeks time when I undertake some honest-to-goodness solo shows in NSW. Im performing exclusively at Lizottes Restaurants (Thurs. 29 @ Dee Why, Fri. 30 @ Kincumber & Sat 31 @ Newcastle). Believe it or not this will only be the third time that Ive ever performed solo, apart from the odd song or two at a charity event or social occasion (weddings, parties, anything). My first official solo gig was in 2010 at SXSW in Austin just before we released Purity Of Essence where I played a half hour set as part of my promo. schedule. Then last year I performed for the Gosford Turf Club at their annual Cup Day. On that occasion I was assisted by the brilliant Ash Naylor, who provided backing vocals and lots of tasty guitar licks. This time Im going to be assisted by my old sparring partner, Mr. Brad Shepherd (hes kinda familiar with what I do). Brad is listed as a Special Guest but he wont be performing by himself. My intention is for these shows to be informal and hopefully Ill be able to chat about how (or why) some of the songs were written and maybe explain a little of what makes me tick. Heres the link to their website, should you be interested: lizottes.au/live/ Dont worry, this is only a little side trip from the main Gurus business. We are gearing up for our second-ever appearance at Splendour In The Grass on Fri. 25 July with the expanded retro-Gurus line-up of ames Baker, Clyde Bramley and the usual suspects (Mark, Rick, Brad and myself). While I was in Perth I had a couple of rehearsals with James and it was great getting to work together after all these years (30 - count em!). I reckon its gonna be a special occasion, one I hope we get to repeat somewhere later on the year (hint! hint!). Splendour has sold out but for those people in Sydney you MIGHT be able to get a sneak preview of our Splendour show because we intend doing a secret warm-up somewhere in the city a couple of days before (o.k - on the Wed. night). I promise to let you know RIGHT HERE where and when that will on the day before the show (or perhaps on the day of…). Has that whet your appetite? Dave
