ONE FOOT IN MY MOUTH 18/7/14 No 118 Editorial:- Glorious sunshine twinkling off the barbed wire brings thoughts of making a break for it. Thing is the long summer evenings only allow for a very late start. Most inmates are sleeping by then. Mind you so are the guards. Must run that past the escape committee. Around The World:- A debate about games at school, and in school time. Not football or cricket, but chess, dominoes, cribbage and double-up-ludo. Certainly they help to improve peoples concentration and mathematical skills. It also teaches how to win or lose gracefully and how to play with and support, partners. My son enjoys chess and took great pride in beating me. There is a member of my extended family from S A, who, correct me if i`m wrong, was South African junior champion. Great Yarmouth, was invaded by bird-watchers from as far afield as France recently, (makes a change from illegal immigrants), in order to catch sight of the small wading bird that drifted off course by 4000 miles. Great Knots usually live on the Australian coast and migrate from their breeding grounds on the tundra of northern Siberia every year. So the Great Knot, sometimes called the great dot because it is normally seen from a great distance, picked a great spot to stop. It was estimated that worldwide they numbered 380,000, and that their numbers were declining. We can announce with confidence that there are now 380,001. It was previously seen in Shetland in 1989, Cleveland in 1996 and in Lancashire in 2004. There was I believe a little wading bird seen in North Wales this week. Quite an unusual variety which carries a small bucket and spade around. History:- 64 AD; The great fire of Rome began, while Nero was supposedly playing the fiddle. 1925; Hitlers `Mein Kampf`, was published. (The original title was Four and a half years (of struggle) against lies, stupidity, and cowardice). Not very catchy. 1938; Douglas Wrong Way Corrigan arrives in Ireland, had left New York for California. 1940; The first successful flight of a helicopter. 1940; Democratic convention nominates FDR for a third term. 1955; Disneyland opens in California. 1969; US Senator Edward Kennedy`s car crashed off a bridge in Massachusetts, killing Mary Jo Kopechne. Birthdays:- 1921; John Glenn, first American to orbit the Earth, 93. 1930; Burt Kwouk, actor, Last of the Summer Wine,(2002-10), 84. 1950; Sir Richard Branson, founder and chairman, Virgin Group, 64. 1957; Sir nick Faldo, golfer, 57. Deaths:- 1915; George William Louis Marshall-Hall, composer, (b1862), 53. 1954; George Machine Gun Kelly), American gangster,(b1895), 59. 2009; Henry Allingham, British supercentenarian and World War 1 veteran,(b1896), 113. Sport:- 1986; Greg Norman shoots 280, to win the Open at Turnberry, Scotland. Lots of great golf and the German GP, sadly no cars on BBC, but hay. Word Of The Day:- NUMNAH, n, a saddle-cloth or pad placed under a saddle. But does it stop a numb bum?
