ONE FOOT IN MY MOUTH 25/7/14 No 123 Editorial:- I`m not sure if it is in the blood or just a coincidence, but the rapid rise in the number of larger `people carriers` in a family close to my heart, gives cause for concern. Could it possibly be that those of this group, living in cities, are expressing a desire for rural type grandeur. One of this group has difficulty in parking at the best of times,(that is finding a space), as mentioned previously, and while the other has no problems of that nature, it will not be long, I hazard a guess, before oaths are muttered. Of course the country dwellers in the Midlands are enjoying a type of sabbatical from the silver tide which has been forecast to be about to invade regions of Europe, from Holland to as far afield as Hungary, in the next two weeks. Thankfully it will only be at it`s worst along river stretches. Around The World:- They are saying that the highest number of people who drink at home are in the 65 plus age group. Puts a whole new slant on the NHS, do they do `hip flask` replacements? It has been reported, I`v read, that the wreck of the Costa Concordia is travelling north at two knots per hour. The report goes on. This is a measure of acceleration, not velocity, so Genoa may soon see the arrival of a supersonic wreck. Do you know he may be right, but I hate smart arses. Must check out what they are saying though. History:- 1603; James VI of Scotland is crowned James I of the United Kingdoms of England and Scotland. 1797; Horatio Nelson loses more than 300 men and his right arm during the failed conquest attempt of Tenerife, (Spain). 1914; Last day of club cricket for W. G. Grace at the age of 66. He made 69 runs. 1943; Benito Mussolini is captured and dismissed as Premier of Italy, during WW II. 1973; George Harrison, pays £1,000,000 tax on his Bangladesh concert and album. 2000; An Air France Concorde, flight 4590 crashes shortly after take off from Paris, killing all 109 on board and 4 on the ground. 2012; The London summer olympics begins. Birthdays:- 1963; Julian Hodgson, four times British chess champion, 51. 1967; Matt LeBlanc, actor ,(Joey in Friends 1994-2004),47. 1970; Francesca Osowska, director, Commonwealth Games, 44. 1978; Louise Brown, world`s first test tube baby, 36. Deaths:- 1865; James Barry, military surgeon, the first female Briton to become a qualified medical doctor. 1997; Ben Hogan, golfer, (Masters-The Open- US Open),(b1913), 84. 2009; Harry Patch, the last surviving soldier to have served in the trenches in WW I, (b1898), 111. Sport:- So it`s 3 x 3 minute rounds in the mens boxing at the Commonwealth Games and no head gear, so the ref can monitor for bleeding more easily. Not all progress proves to be better. Next thing you know, the cyclists will do away with saddles to avoid sores and prevent the riders from falling off. There must be piles of improvements that could be made. The swimming is good, but I can`t wait for the track and field to start. Just a thought, I am wondering if our Mo has decided not to run on commercial grounds? Same with the fastest man not taking part in the 100 mts. If he looses in the shorter race his credit rating suffers, whereas if he comes second in the relay, it`s not all his fault. Sorry must not get controversial. Word Of The Day:- TYPO: n, colloq, a typographical error. Anybody know how to get Typex off screens?
