ONLY IN EGYPT? Exchanging Gifts Superstitions. I really dont know if this is Only In Egypt, and even if its Only traditional with some. 1. Never give someone a letter opener gift! (or for the matter knives and similar sharp objects). It presages a cut in your relationship. End of friendship! 2. Never give handkerchiefs (or scarves?). Its bad luck to the receiver. That can be stopped by paying for the gift. One pound will settle the matter! 3. And my favourite.... When you send your friends home cooked food in one of your own serving plates or containers, expect to get it back filled. To return an empty plate is bad luck!
