OP ED TO ROGER GOODELL & NFL After listening to Roger Goodell - TopicsExpress

OP ED TO ROGER GOODELL & NFL After listening to Roger Goodell today I remain convinced that the NFL still does not get it. Programs will not solve the problems that face the NFL and its now tainted image. People want results now, not another committee that will create new processes, that produce the same results. Change only occurs when people decide to change or when the penalty is so severe that fear of loss becomes a prime motivator. The lack of a mentorship program with substance is essential, the rookie symposium is non-impactful. Mentors who have walked in the shoes of these young men is what is needed. What weight does most coaches, the Commissioner of the NFL and owners carry in speaking to the pysche of these 20-30 yr old millionaires, who believe that theyre nothing more to the establishment (NFL) than an expendable commodity? A former player can relate, because he probably has come from a similar back ground and has already traveled the road these young men are now journeying. A young player is more apt to heed the advice of a former NFL veteran out of respect. Lastly, and I realize many former players may not agree, but an example must be made. A player that has been given multiple second chances, to no avail. Playing in the NFL is a privilege that many would love to have had the opportunity to experience. But when a player is willing to jeopardize that privilege understanding the ramifications for their actions, and what it will cause themselves, their teams, the league and their families, he should be penalized to the max; permanent banishment from the NFL. Its clear that to GET THIS RIGHT, mentorship that guides these boys to men is necessary and that the clear message, that domestic violence and multiple rules violations will lead to permanent banishment from the league!
