OPEN-AIR BURN PITS STILL IN USE 30 July 2014 FIVE FACTS: 1. Two trash incinerators at a large, joint U.S.-Afghan air base are vastly underused in favor of Open-Air burn Pits. 2. The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said the U.S. paid $775,ooo for two incinerators. 3. But SIGAR found the facility took in only a third of the U.S. – generated solid waste. The rest, including batteries, plastic and other toxic material, went into Afghan-run Burn Pits, which cost less to operate. 4. Burn Pits in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere produce large amounts of smoke considered potential health hazards. 5. Hundreds of troops have reported medical problems they believe are related to living and working near burn pits. The Veterans Affairs has set up a registry of affected troops to study the health consequences of Open-Air Burn Pits. airforcetimes/article/20140722/NEWS08/307220071/Report-Open-air-burn-pits-still-use-Afghanistan
