OPENING PARAGRAPHS TO NOVEL ... And so it begins ... Nearly eighty six years have past since that fateful night; a night that transformed Elliston Island for all not only who lived there, but for the rest of the world. Eighty six years ago, Elliston Island was a welcoming, lively and comforting place, full of life and exchanges with countless travellers and new comers. This was no longer the case! The most drastic change was the stone wall that now encircled their island resembling a natural mountain structure, built to keep the rest of the world out and as a protection to those living on the island. There was only one small entry into the city’s port, heavily guarded at all times by a special militant group ordained by the Leaders along the tittering heights of the stone wall, in which they upheld the only command given to them - keep the residents inside the walls, and everything else out. The only exception to their command was allowing one ship given a special command to enter the island with needed supplies. The ship was identified by its bow which had been painted to appear as if it had been burnt asunder and by the flag it flew with the Leaders symbol upon it. The ship came to Elliston Island once every 6 weeks, and had become a legend of its own on either side of the wall. Only the Leaders ever were allowed on board the supply ship, and they had decreed that no resident was ever to board or to interfere with it. The residents of Elliston Island had come to view the supply ship as a dark omen when it entered their port and were only to happy to see it depart as fast as possible. Thus no one sought it out or attempted to seek out or learn of its secrets. The dark omen it appears began with the ship’s master who was the only person ever seen aboard the ship or on the dock, and who interacted with the Leaders. The ship’s master had a foreboding presence about him, wearing a long black hood and cape that covered his face and shielded most of his body from view. Only his arms were visible and the residents came to identify who he was by the unusual scars that were vivid and clearly evident even from a distance, thus avoiding him. This suited him just fine, as he paid no heed to the residents as he never went out of his way to look at or speak to any who embarked to the docks to get a look of the ship. The rest of the crew, if there even was one, were never seen. In fact the ship gave no evidence of anyone else existing aboard the ship, as the cargo was unloaded late at night, and the ship left port immediately upon emptying its cargo. For the residents of the island, this was the only mysterious part they had to contend with. They simply went on with their lives, rising each morning to resume their daily work and responsibilities, almost exactly the same as it had ever been. Only the buildings, the technology and their clothing showed how much time had passed, and how their society had adapted since the events of that fateful night.
