OPERATION CONSERVATION... WMSP has a pair of Sumatran tigers - Hujan (female) and Emas (male). They are ambassadors for the plight of tigers in the wild. At the beginning of the 20th century the world tiger population was estimated to have been around 100,000. Today, numbers could be as low at 3200! 100 years ago there were 9 subspecies of tiger ranging across Asia and parts of Europe. Today there are 6 subspecies (one thought to be extinct in the wild) left, all in isolated populations. Major threats to tigers are poaching, human-tiger conflict, humans hunting tigers prey to extinction and habitat destruction. BUT YOU CAN HELP... You can do your bit to help tiger conservation. Deforestation to make way for oil palm plantations is causing many of the problems, particularly in Sumatra and Malaysia. Palm oil is in about half of all packaged foods! Check out the 21st Century Tiger website which gives you tips on how to avoid palm oil from none sustainable sources. 21stcenturytiger.org/tiger-facts/palm-oil
