KNOWN to his fans as Noko Mashaba, Jonas Lekganyane (21) is the brain behind the cartoon series, The Adventures of Noko Mashaba. Spurred on by his love for cartoons, Lekganyane founded Rams Comics in 2013. “I have been passionate about art for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I used to redraw Dragon Ball Z cartoons and every painting in our house. I was the type of child who skipped school or karate lessons to watch cartoons. I have always been fascinated by how people can breathe life into something as simple as a drawing. “I once saw an episode of the American animation, South Park and loved how they used cartoons to portray and discuss relevant issues affecting the world. I was fascinated by how one can put so much meaning into cartoons and how they possess the ability to exaggerate certain things just to make a valid point,” says Lekganyane. He says he taught himself about animation using Google and YouTube and also learned about the business and creative industry, as well as the computer industry. The Adventures of Noko Mashaba is the story of an average guy from Limpopo who goes on bizarre adventures. “The series has received fairly good reviews from all of South Africa and Botswana readers since its premiere. It went viral after the release of an episode titled, Noko in High School,” he says. Lekganyane says he has been working with other advertising and production companies and political parties such as the EFF doing commercial, corporate, and campaigning work for them. He wants to receive international exposure and reach as many people as possible. “I want to produce a movie too, but for now I will continue producing online content and commercials. We’re also working on getting the Adventures of Noko Mashaba on TV.” He says there is a lot of talent in South Africa and there are a lot of people who have the potential to become independent animators. “I would like to encourage anyone who is passionate about anything to pursue their dreams.”
