OPSU Crops Judging Prepares for Nationals Released by OPSU Campus Communications Goodwell, Okla. — Members of the OPSU Crops Judging Team have been busy this semester, traveling to regional contests and working hard in the classroom and greenhouse in preparation for the 2014 North American Colleges & Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Crops Contest. The contest will be held April 12 at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. The team competed earlier this semester, finishing fourth at the Iowa State Contest held February 8 in Ames, Iowa, and taking third at the Kansas State Contest held March 14 in Manhattan, Kan. Each contest is made up of four individual parts: agronomic quiz; math practical; lab practical; and plant and seed identification. The contests are designed around the objectives for the Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) program which is administered by the American Society of Agronomy (ASA). The CCA certification was established in 1992 to provide a benchmark for practicing agronomy professionals. The CCA professional standards are widely recognized and respected in industry, academia, and government. Dr. Curtis Bensch, OPSU Crops Judging Coach, spoke of the contests and the hard work that goes into preparing to compete, saying, Its very practical and good preparation for skills and knowledge necessary in the work place. Students that competed for the OPSU Crops Judging team in Iowa and Kansas included: Matt Blakesley of Ulysses, Kan.; Craig Bohl of Ulysses, Kan.; Kenzi Buehler of Loveland, Colo.; Glen Calvert of Cheyenne, Okla.; John Hein of Durham, Kan; Emily Knop of Weatherford, Okla; Jacob Murphy of Texhoma, Okla., and Willem Pretorius of Hugoton, Kan.
