OREGON LEGALIZES GAY MARRIAGE This dear palace of the mind This dear Oregon Today you made me weep in public In our central plaza as all hugged. I really had to stop my interviewing And pinch myself: This state wiped out hatred again! This state made up for all the hatred of World Wars Of lynchings, pogroms, wife beatings, kweer bashings The killings of Ellis and Abdill. And this judge, no shy man in black robes said Hey don’t look to the heavens for the skies to fall Look to us me, we Oregonians We citizens of this unprecedented paradise Of the unfoldment of all that’s in the dark corners Of the human heart And love what we can find and raise up in love. That was his judicial reasoning. I think he was the first juror in the history of mankind To give love standing. ~
