ORIGIN OF AMURRI Description: CHAPPTER ONE Amurri is said to be the biggest town in Nkanu West local Government Area of Enugu State. In the north, it is bounded by Agbani and Umueze Communities, and bounded by Obe community in the North-west, and in the West, it is bounded by Ozalla community. It is equally bounded by Ugbawka, Ogbaku and Agbaogugu in the south. Amurri is a land that has been blessed by the Almighty father who created heaven and earth. This is because, in the town, there are many things that can enhence the growth of living and non-living things. The geographical condition is quite clement that evrybody in the town enjoys it. During the raining season, the rains are moderate and that help the fertilization and growth of agricultural activities.Flooding is not frequent in the land or erosion that cause damages in the land. The dry season is moderate and clement. The season is also very important, since it marks the harvesting period. Amurri town is a livable place where every body is welcomed. It is a home of hospitality. The land is where everybody is given the chance to enjoy his or her fundamental human right. As it is with any other part of the Igbo land (Eastern part of Nigeria), Amurri has numerous cultures and traditions that guide both the indigenes and non-indigenes. Culture is the creation of God. The english dictionary defined culture as the way of life, of a particular group of people in a particular community, in a given time. The Amurri culture like any other existed before the advent of Christianity. When christianity came in, there were religious and culture crisis in the land. Every effort was made to ensure that people (indigenes) did not stray from the culture. Christianity was against traditional culture, so to say, while traditional religion kicked against christianity. CHAPTER TWO Theres a myth about the origin of Amurri. It is said that Amurri originated from a particular community in the town known as Umuigbo. A man known as Ohanwokoro brought Umuigbo into being. it was said that Ohanwokoro gave birth to so many children whose names were anonymous. According to him, Ohanwaokoro was said to be the person serving the shrine known as Anuumuoha when he was alive. He was the chef priest of the shrine; no body from any other part of the town can go there to offer sacrifices except him. He is the only person to offer sacrifices at the shrine. The shrine was said to be very powerful that nobody who committed an abominable act can go there to worship. There is a knife known as Mma-oke, this Mma-oke is what he uses in scarifying anything at the shrine. This Mma-oke is equally a mark of authority irrespective of who he is. No one touches or uses the Mma-oke for any other purpose, except what it is meant for. Ohanwaokoro served the shrine with his whole heart till the period of his death. when he was about to join his ancestors, he felt seriously ill that he needed immediate and careful attention. It is the culture in every part of Igbo land that the first son (Okpara) has to take over from his father, the responsibilities of the family of the family after his death. The father has to bless his first son before his death, and encourage him to take care of his position in the family after his departure. It was said that Ohanwaokoros first son (Okpara) was lazy and did not care much about his father. His character was not pleasing to his father and so the daughter who got married at Enuagu took the responsibility of the Okpara. Due to his unacceptable character to his father the reverse became the case. At the point of his death, he call his grandson, the son of his daughter (Nwada) and gave him the blessings he could have given to his own Okpara by giving him Mma-oke, which symbolizes eldership of the land. Generally, as revealed by the elders (e.g. elder Anubueze Chukwueze, late Onweangene, elder Nwoye Nweke Onu, etc) Umuigbo is said to be the first inhabitants of Amurri land. This shows that Umuigbo is the eldest and the founding father of Amurri and that is the reason why they are called Umuigboanuodempama (existence). They held the first position in the land. Since the okpara was not capable of taking care of his sick father till the point of his death, his elderly position (birth right) was shifted from Umuigbo to Amaegbele where the daughter (Ada) of the man got married.
