ORIGIN OF DOMINICAS CREOLE WEAR: Roseau Market in the 1780s painted by Agostino Brunias. In the first painting, The group of houses at the back is where the Garraway Hotel is today. The house on the extreme left with stilts survives today. IN the second painting, the artist shifts the view to the west. The building in the background is on the site of the old Post Office. At the time, it was a wooden building and was called The Market House. The building on the right of the painting is where the Royal bank of Canada is now. Note the petticoats, foulards, headties etc that were embelished during the 19th and 20th centuries to the present.
