ORKAR COUP REFLECTS CURRENT DEV...........DAILY TRUST Recent events causing friction in the Nigerian polity have their roots in the 1990 military coup announced by late Major Gideon Orkar in which some northern states were excised from the country, elder statesman Wantaregh Paul Unongo has said. Unongo spoke yesterday in Kano while reacting to the nomination of retired Colonel Tony Nyam by President Goodluck Jonathan to participate in the forthcoming national conference after his uncomplimentary remarks while serving as a member of the dialogue committee. Unongo at the conference of leaders and elders of northern Nigeria said nobody should attempt to insult the intelligence of northerner as they are aware of the fact that retired Colonel Tony Nyam was the mastermind of the bloody Orkar coup. He wondered why President Jonathan is so comfortable with Nyam despite warnings by well meaning Nigerians to stay away from him. “In my evidence, everything that is happening in Nigeria today seems to be a reflection of that particular problem (the coup) that was caused by these particular people. I don’t know why Mr. President loves Nyam so much even when he insulted a serving governor (Adams Oshiomole). Anybody who thinks we should tolerate these people (Nyam) should be prepared to fight another war because there was a civil war in which many brilliant young men lost their lives,” he added.
