OT: FARENAS SETTLES SCORE WITH RAPPER 50 CENT BY STOPPING PREVIOUSLY UNDEFEATED DAVIS MANILA — Filipino junior lightweight contender Michael Farenas is again in a position to fight for a world championship. Twice denied of a world title reign in the past, Farenas pushed himself back to the limelight in a splendid way when he outworked and eventually stopped previously undefeated Mark “Too Sharp” Davis in the 9th round of their 12-round encounter at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut. It all started when Farenas opened a cut over Davis’ right eye in the opening round. The American then struggled all throughout as Farenas pummelled Davis with vicious shots round after round. In the eight, Farenas’ brutal brutal blows sent Davis reeling into a corner that forced referee Steve Smoger to waive off the match at the :58 mark. “Talagang pinag-aralan ni Mike si Davis. Alam namin magaling si Davis pero kulang pa siya sa experience. Yun ang naging malaking advantage talaga ni Mike,” said manager Gerry Penalosa, who was at ringside to witness his ward’s spectacular win. Entering the fight, the 2005 United States national champion Davis had a perfect 16-0 record with 5 knockouts. With the win Farenas will now be ranked second in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) superfeatherweight division currently held by Argenis Mendez of the Dominican Republic. The 27-year-old Davis meantime is promoted by rapper 50 Cent who will be celebrating his 38 birthday this weekend. The 30-year-old Farenas (39-4-4, 31 KO’s) once fought and lost to one of 50 Cent’s boxers Yuriorkis Gamboa when they fought for the interim WBA superfeatherweight crown two years ago in Las Vegas. Before Gamboa, Farenas settled for a 3 round technical draw against WBA superfeatherweight kingpin Takashi Uichiyama of Japan.
