OUR OFFICIAL LOGO... Do you know what it means? This FLASHBACK MOMENT is historic in nature, a bit different from my other stories I submit, yet personal in nature still. I thought Id take this Homecoming Weekend opportunity to share how this LOGO came to be, and what it really means. THE BACKGROUND: My mom, Margaret Ann English, created this logo in 1973. Being an artist, she was asked to come up with a logo to be placed on the team helmets, and also to be painted at center field (by Mom and Dad with a hand sprayer) on home game days for the 73-74 football season. This was the first time a logo had been painted on the field. She was honored to do this because it was my brother, Phil Englishs, Senior year, his last year playing football for the Merrill Bluejays. Her biggest thrill was when Phil ran onto the field, and her logo was on his helmet. THE MEANING: Mom wanted to represent the major sports in high school in her design. (There was no hockey at that time)...... The round overall shape represents the baseball for The Baseball Team. The 11 stars ( not 6 or 8 stars like some logos you see) represent the 11 positions of the football players on The Football Team. The 5 points, the beak and the points on head of bluejay, represent the 5 starters on The Basketball Team. The white background surrounded by the red stripe, symbolize the wrestling mat for The Wrestling Team. The red outline represents the track for The Track Team. The streak behind the eye of the Bluejay, is red, a color of passion, toughness and aggression characteristic of a bluejay bird. So, now, when you see that LOGO, the official one with the 11 stars, you will know that it is more than a picture of a Bluejay Head in a circle. It was designed to reflect the multiple dimensions of being a Merrill Bluejay.... in our Hometown, Merrill. (Linda English Kautza)
