OUR SCHOOL IS GOING DOWN - GCIOBA Old Boys Association of Government College, Ibadan (GCI) has called for public private/ partnership in the management and funding of the institution to salvage it from its numerous challenges. The association said decaying infrastructures, poor staffing, with 20 regular teachers attending to over 3,000 students, had crippled the institution. National President of the association, Chief Biodun Jolaoso, disclosed this in Lagos yesterday, in an interactive session with journalists to herald the 85th anniversary and annual reunion programme of the old boys of the school, slated for Monday, October 13 to 18 at the college premises. The National Secretary of the association, James Engurube, the Chairman 1964 set, Femi Soewu, the National Secretary, Dapo Sonola, among others, supported the national president at the media function. Jolaoso said the institution founded in 1929 had suffered infrastructure deficit and dearth of teaching staff over the years, thereby plunging the one-time glorious college to academic decadence. Aside these challenges, he said the college was also grappling with security challenges, decaying sports culture and a very poor student/teacher ratio that could never produce good grades in examination. He said the old boys, had through direct alumni interventions, invested over N150 million in the institution, but noted that more needed to be done to revive the ailing college. According to him, the GCIOBA House, which comprised the Hall of Fame, new library and other projects, which had gulped over N65 million, would be unveiled during the 2014 annual reunion programme. “We feel a lot for our school. We are saying that if government is ready, we are prepared to assist the government. If you put your money somewhere, you have to be part of the running of the school. We are not saying we are taking over the school from the government. The ownership of the school rests on the government. We are saying that the way it is, the Old Boys are ready to partner with government in various areas,” he said.
