OUR UP BAA BARKADA: 30 YEARS AND COUNTING. Five years of punishing academic work at the University of the Philippines notoriously rigorous BS BAA program and another twenty-five years of finding our own place in this world have served to further deepen our long-standing affinity with each other, given our shared experiences over a span of such a lasting period of time. In fact, weve known each other so well that weve actually mirrored each other in many profound ways. Was this a clinical case of social affinity since the BS BAA programs male student population was just a rare minority at that time? Or was it because the guys in Class 89 just happen to be very affable chaps? Whatever the reasons were, our group – christened by one naughty smart-aleck as the Autistic Savants (another term for talented guys who happen to have loose screws in their heads) – gelled well together. So well, in fact, that since then, every personal milestone from each of our gang – from acting as bridges to win a coveted paramour, to being part of a friends wedding entourage, to witnessing the birth of an offspring, to being chosen to be the godfather of their child, or even during hapless family tragedies and individual vicissitudes – serve as key moments to manifest our solidarity among each other. Today, as our college barkada celebrates its Silver Anniversary of our graduation from the U.P. BS BAA program through our annual Yuletide get-together, we look back at how far we have gone; how big we have grown (including our better halves and kids), and resolve to further enrich ourselves with many more years of fun, fellowship, and friendship.
