OV Aquatic Center receives Outstanding Facility Award Oro Valley, Ariz. (August 30, 2013) – The Oro Valley Aquatic Center was named recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Facility Award for Populations 25,000 – 100,000 by the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA). Facilities were judged on several criteria, including: impact on leisure opportunities for the service area, innovative features, aesthetics and unique methods of financing the project. “We’re excited to receive statewide recognition for this amazing facility, which is drawing competitors from all over the United States as well as meeting the recreational needs of our residents,” said Oro Valley Mayor Satish Hiremath. “And it’s already having a tremendous impact on our community’s economic health—something that will continue to build in the coming years.” The Oro Valley Aquatic Center, which opened March 15, 2013, was a $5 million capital improvement project aimed at investing in the Town as a growing sports tourism destination, as well as increasing recreational opportunities for residents. An early feasibility study indicated that this facility would create approximately $2.2 million a year in economic activity in the Oro Valley community, and the Town is on trend to meet that $2 million mark. The facility has already played host to several state- and regional-level competitions, and in April 2014, the Oro Valley Aquatic Center will host the National Synchronized Swimming Championships. The Oro Valley Aquatic Center includes a competition, Olympic-sized pool with “fast” gutters and a Colorado timing system, recreational/warm-up pool, diving boards, giant water slide, interactive splash pad, family changing rooms, classrooms, shaded bleachers and a concession stand. Additionally, the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association announced that Oro Valley Communications Administrator Misti Nowak won Best in Show at the APRA state-wide photo contest, with her photograph of children enjoying the new Aquatic Center splash pad at sunset. Aquatic Center helps break Guinness World Record The Oro Valley Aquatic Center is one of 432 facilities worldwide that participated in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 18, 2013. The event, which raises awareness of the importance of water safety and learning to swim, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, with 32,450 participants across the globe.
