SLOVON, D.V.M. 9623A REISTERSTOWN RD OWINGS MILLS, MD. 21117 (410- 363-0393) May 5, 2014 ALLERGIES & ITCHING Many dogs and cats develop allergies as they get older, typically peaking between 3-5 years of age. You may notice chronic licking, perhaps staining the hair brown, noticing hair loss and in advanced cases irritation or scabs forming. I usually ask if the pet is up all night scratching or licking, a certain sign something is going on. Lesions can be on almost any area of the body, sometimes localizing on the fee or another body part. Lesions like these can be from fleas, other parasites, pollens, grasses, molds, and food. Determining which one of these is the culprit requires an extensive history and physical examination. Sometimes skin scrapings, fecal samples, and blood work may be needed. Treatment depends on what is identified as the cause or at least what we think is the cause. We use various medications including oral antihistamines, steroids, antibiotics and topical shampoos or leave on products. In advanced cases we use immune modulators to dull the allergic response. Where food allergy is suspected a trial with a proven hypo-allergenic diet is recommended. Treating allergies can take a little while to get a satisfactory response, so I always advise clients to let me know if the treatment is working, and if not we move on to something else. SENTINEL SPECTRUM Sentinel spectrum does everything sentinel does (prevents heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and fleas) and now also treats tapeworms which dogs commonly get from eating fleas or rodents.
