OWOSSO - The Citys Controversial Rental Inspection Program Was Again A Major Issue At The City Councils Monday Meeting. The Council discussed and voted on; how often a landlord needed to register a rental unit, how much the fee should be and how often rental inspections should be. The fee was $25 per unit with the landlord needing to register every two years. The new proposed fee was $100.00 with a Landlord registering every 5 years. After Mayor Ben Frederick stated that he felt the fee should only be for what the city need to administer the program, Councilman Robert Teich Jr. asked why then did the city want to now charge $100 when it costs the city only $25.00. After more discussion a vote was taken and the fee was set at $25 every five years. The next part discussed was how often did the rental units needed to be inspected by the city. Councilman Teich stated that he thought it should be every ten years. Councilwoman Loreen Bailey made a motion for the units to be inspected every 5 years, it was seconded and passed 4 to 3. Owosso has approximately 2,200 rental units.
