OX CART FIRE PUSHING SMOKE INTO CHAFFEE AND FREMONT COUNTIES SALIDA, Colo., June 11, 2013 – The U.S. Forest Service – San Isabel National Forest, Salida Ranger District is experiencing a large amount of smoke from the Ox Cart Fire on the Rio Grande National Forest. Smoke will be very visible to residents in Salida, Howard, Coaldale and Cotopaxi. The fire is likely to produce large smoke columns as it burns actively due to the hot, dry and windy conditions. The fire is currently not threatening private land or other important resources. This fire will likely be very active for the next several days. Fire managers on the Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Rio Grande National Forest are in continual contact. They will coordinate any actions based on expected fire activity. The lightning-caused wildfire is being managed by the Rio Grande National Forest in a manner that allows it to play its natural role in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. The fire is burning in aspen, Douglas-fir and bristlecone pine approximately 6 miles southeast of Poncha Pass in Chaffee County.
