Oak Street in Calumet was a busy street. It was a transportation hub, retail center, and a prime place to make a statement. This parade during the Copper Miners Strike of 1913-1914 was heading east on Oak towards 7th Street in downtown Calumet, then known as Red Jacket. The group is passing in front of (from left to right) the Kitti duplex, the Kitti meat market, the Arlington Hotel, and the Bollman Block. The parade was led by John Huhta, who was later convicted for the Dally/Jane murders which took place on December 7, 1913 (101 years ago this week) in nearby Painesdale, MI. Today, many of the impressive structures lining Oak Street are #MissingintheCopperCountry If youd like to learn more about the Dally/Jane murders, you can start here: copperrange.org/strike.htm
