Oaksterdam University December 2014 NEWSLETTER (510) 251-1544 Chancellors Chat: Kamala Harris evolves on legalization Id like to share some excitement from Reform CA with you! In politics, they call it evolving. President Barack Obama moved on gay marriage. Yesterday, Attorney General Kamala Harris changed her outlook on cannabis legalization. In August, she laughed when asked for her position on legalization. This set off a firestorm in our movement. Thousands of Californians, and OU Alumni, visited ReformCAto send her an email and let her know what they thought of her response. In September and October, her office found itself in the middle of two strong reminders that prohibition is still in effect in California. First, we learned that officers from her office participated in warrantless raids on voter approved medical growers in Mendocino. Then, her office admitted that there were 20,346 arrests for cannabis in California in 2013 -- disproportionally affecting twenty-somethings and Hispanics. Finally, yesterday, she opened up, telling BuzzFeeds Adam Serwer that she doesnt, “have any moral opposition to it. Then she went on to say that, there’s a certain inevitability about it. This is a small, but significant, win for our movement since shes in a position to interpret and later help implement a 2016 ballot initiative to regulate and tax cannabis. Tip of the Month - Horticulture Powdery mildew spreads quickly. Don’t wait for it to appear—be pro-active and spray preventatively. An easy solution is right in your refrigerator: milk. As long as your plants are at least two weeks from harvest, a mix of 10 percent milk to 90 percent water can be sprayed on any part of the plant. Otherwise just spray on infected leaves. Another way to stop the spores is to raise the pH of the alkalinity level of the leaf surface. Potassium bicarbonate, found at garden stores, is my first choice. You can also use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Mix 1 teaspoon of either to 1 quart of the 10 percent milk mix; if too close to harvest, omit the milk and just use water for an effective foliar spray.
