Oakwood 5th graders in Mrs. Podshadley’s Science class got practical experience in following the Design Process last Monday. Students were given the challenge of how to create a pocket-sized bottle opener. Each class was shown three-dimensional computer renderings of five different opener prototypes. As a group, they set the parameters for essential features; and then had to decide which bottle openers would work best, cost the least, be appealing to consumers, be light-weight, and be able to go through airport security. After much deliberation, the class agreed upon two prototypes. Students then observed a 3-D printer in action, making the two prototypes they chose! On Wednesday, the students tested their prototypes and found some unexpected results when not all of the openers worked. It was time to re-evaluate and go back to the drawing board!
