Obama like his predecessors continues to disappoint. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a Christmas wish-list for major corporations. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) “free trade” agreement is a secret policy being pressed by corporate America, and Obama, a dream of the 1 percent, that in one blow could: offshore millions of American jobs, free the banksters from oversight, ban Buy America policies needed to create green jobs and rebuild our economy, decrease access to medicine, flood the U.S. with unsafe food and products, and empower corporations to attack our environmental and health safeguards. 600 corporate advisors have access to the text, while the public, Members of Congress, journalists, and civil society are excluded. It took Wikileaks to release documents so we could see how horrible this agreement would be. TPP raises significant concerns about citizens’ freedom of expression, due process, innovation, the future of the Internet’s global infrastructure, and the right of sovereign nations to develop policies and laws that best meet their domestic priorities. In sum, the TPP puts at risk some of the most fundamental rights that enable access to knowledge for the world’s citizens.
