Obamacare…..Bait & Switch? It’s going to happen in early 2014…California and now Ohio have recently released the base rates being submitted by insurers and the “Rate Shock” that independent analysts and conservative critics predicted would happen…is happening. Of course, this didn’t stop California’s Exec Dir of their Exchange from making an apples-to-oranges (scratch that…ostriches) comparison and claiming “a home run for consumers in every region of California”. He has since been criticized by nearly everyone for making such a misleading comparison and they are attempting to spin the public-relations disaster. When you look at the costs of 2013 vs. the now known costs of 2014…the rates are up…waaaay up. Now, Liberals…facing reality, are changing their tune and conceding that premiums will go up for most people in the individual market. They’re justifying it though by saying the insured will have “much richer benefits” and “that the cost-increasing regulations are meant to help people with pre-existing conditions, so they’re worth it”. Another justification is that “rate shock will help a tiny minority of people who can’t get insurance today”. That all might be true, but they weren’t saying that before, they were saying the opposite…had they said those things in 2009, would Obamacare have even passed? I’m not saying Obamacare is good or bad…I’ll wait to judge after implementation and we’ve had some time to evaluate more than just the base insurance rates. However, can we all finally agree that the cost of health insurance will go up, likely by a significant margin, due to the implementation of Obamacare? Is it worth it? We will see. There have been many articles published on this topic over the past couple of weeks…interesting stuff! forbes/sites/theapothecary/2013/05/30/rate-shock-in-california-obamacare-to-increase-individual-insurance-premiums-by-64-146/
