Obamacare… the beginning and the continuation of our ruin… or - TopicsExpress

Obamacare… the beginning and the continuation of our ruin… or so it would seem from some of what I’ve heard recently. True? I don’t know. It seems to me that the proposals, policies, and positions held by all flavors of politicians and political parties are ignoring what I think the actual issue is: too many people are living too long. And that does not just include we older folks. Modern medicine has made it possible for people of all ages to survive what had been the unsurvivable. Back in the 50s a 2-pound (or less) preemie had virtually no chance of living. Now, it is an expensive challenge that is regularly accomplished. Cancer? Again, that is an expensive challenge… but surviving this disease for 10 or 20 years (maybe even more) is no big deal nowadays. Simple old-age is becoming older and older. My husband had a cousin live to be 114. Reaching 100 is no longer unusual. 90? My Dad died reached 91. 80? Absolutely no problem for the majority of those reading this to live that long. 75? In today’s world it is considered a shame if a person dies that young without there being some extenuating circumstance. That’s the problem. Virtually all of our social safety nets were based on that magic number: 75. When the policies and programs were put in place it was assumed that the infirm would die prior to that age and the elderly would die within a year or two of attaining it (if they attained it at all).
